Dear Mr. Ahmed Shaheed
I well know that my case is just one example among all the cases of violation of human rights in Iran. However, through telling what I have been through, I want to play a role in revealing the deplorable condition of the people of my country.
Only because of having published my thoughts in a simple weblog and having been abroad for my studies I became the subject of heavy accusations fabricated by the intelligence service of the Islamic Republic. My family and my life have been affected by this and eventually I had to leave my homeland. All of this makes me think about the fact that the regime can make anybody in Iran be the victim of its suppressive forces so easily through such false accusations and false confessions. As regards to the fact that you are preparing a report on the condition of human rights in Iran while the regime prevents you from entering the country, I believe that the exposure of the truth by people like me who have been victims of human rights violation in Iran and had to leave the country is the only window which can cast a light on the reality of the Iranian society. I believe this truth should find a place for itself in your report.
Violation of Iranian people's basic rights goes far beyond what is being published in the Iranian and world news. The regime's political police is constantly interrogating, threatening and intimidating political and social activists, many of them are prevented from publicizing these news, and even when they flee the country, the shadow of these threats still remains on their families inside Iran. Unlike what the Islamic Republic pretends, the violation of human rights in Iran does not solely exist in the opposition's literature but it is a lived reality which continues to have an impact on the lives of many in every corner of Iran.
One of the Islamic Republic's tricks in turning Iran into a big prison is, on the one hand preventing Iranian activists from going abroad and on the other hand, constantly interrogating and harassing students, reporters and human rights activists when entering Iran. I, as a student outside of Iran, also became a victim of this policy when I entered the country in order to visit my family. After that I had only two options, either to stay in Iran, accept to be prevented from going abroad and thus be excluded from the right to study, or to permanently leave Iran and be excluded from the right to see my family and homeland. Is it possible to speak of Iran as anything but a prison and of my people as anything but hostages?
In the eyes of the Islamic Republic, being a woman means being a convict, being a student means being a suspect, being a blogger means being a spy. I, as a woman, student, and a blogger as well as a protester among millions of fellow human beings in suffering, ask you to use this opportunity in order to draw the world's attention to this torturous condition which is dominating Iranian people's lives today.
Sincerely Yours
Bahar Alinia
